York Science Saturdays are STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs available for students in Grade 3-8. Join us for these multi-week programs as we explore topics in STEM through an engaging, interactive, and hands-on approach to learning.

Programs are separated into Junior (grades 3/4/5) and Senior (grades 6/7/8) sections, and will run during the following dates. Students may sign up for multiple programs or only one program at a time. Classes are limited to 10 or 20 students, so register early!

Junior Programs (Grades 3/4/5)

January 13, January 20 and January 27, 2018

Junior - Science Variety Pack
Time: 9:00am to 12:00pm || Course Fee: $195.00 || Limited to 20 students
Why does a tiny rock sink but a huge boat will float? What is DNA and why is important? How does Artificial Intelligence work? Join us for another round of Science Variety Pack where students will get the opportunity to investigate the properties of DNA, engineer their own mini-robots, and learn about buoyancy by designing and creating their own boats!

Note: This Science Variety Pack is designed to be different from the Science Variety Pack Fall 2017.

Junior - Code with Kids! App Development
Time: 1:00pm to 4:00pm || Course Fee: $195.00 || Limited to 20 students
Designed to give students the skills required for computer programming, become a pioneer in the new coding initiative! Through the Code with Kids! program, students will see how computer science is important in the development of lifelong skills necessary for 21st century life by designing their own App from scratch using drag and drop programs.

Junior- Science Variety Pack: Professional Series
Time: 9:00am to 12:00pm || Course Fee: $195.00 || Limited to 20 students
This series of workshops focuses on techniques in scientific careers. From identifying diseases under a microscope to neutralizing acids & bases, students will develop practical skills and knowledge while having fun. Join us for lab visits, mentor talks, and engaging activities!

Senior Programs (Grades 6/7/8)

Senior - Code with Kids! App Development
Time: 9:00am to 12:00pm || Course Fee: $195.00 || Limited to 20 students
Playing games on your tablet might be one of your favourite activities but creating your own app takes it to a whole new level. Use Android Studio to create your own app and put yourself in control. The possibilities are endless as you create your own virtual world!

Senior Biology
Time: 1:00pm to 4:00pm || Course Fee: $195.00 || Limited to 20 students
Biology can be very humerus if you keep the ion the prize! Join us in our adventures as we investigate all aspects of biology, from genetics to forensics. Students will get the opportunity to explore the human body by taking a closer look at Mendel's Principles of Inheritance, analyzing impacts of diseases in body systems, solve crime with blood typing and more.

Senior Chemistry
Time: 1:00pm to 4:00pm || Course Fee: $195.00 || Limited to 20 students
Ever told a chemistry joke and had no reaction? Don’t worry, our chemistry program ‘periodically’ has a lot of fun! Join us in becoming Chemists by practicing proper lab techniques through experimental chemistry, exploring the molecular structure of various compounds, investigating household product safety, and more!

Senior Physics & Engineering
Time: 1:00pm to 4:00pm || Course Fee: $195.00 || Limited to 20 students
Uncertain about physics? Heisenberg would advise you to join our program and have the time of your life while designing your own amusement park! From games to rides, students will get the opportunity to build a roller coaster, design a Buzzwire game, and create a pinball machine.

A thorough understanding of the possibilities of science is important for young adults. This Professional Series of workshops will give students the opportunity to develop skills that will assist their ability to transform knowledge into something meaningful. Explore proper chemistry laboratory techniques, dissection skills, and catch some rays by designing solar sails! Join us for lab visits, mentor talks, and engaging activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child bring electronic devices?

Please note that we encourage students to leave all electronic game devices at home, as we are not responsible if they are lost. If your child carries a cell phone with them, we ask that it be put on vibrate during program hours.

Do you offer financial assistance?

We offer Financial Assistance for Science Engagement Programs, when funding is available. For more information, please click on the appropriate links or email explore@yorku.ca.

What is your refund policy?

Cancellations made 21 calendar days prior to the start of the program are eligible for a full refund, minus a $75 administration fee per child, per course. Refunds will be given upon written notice of cancellation. No refunds will be made after the 21 calendar day deadline. No refunds will be given for days when a participant is absent and missed days cannot be made up.
